Primary school philosophers

You may feel that being five years old would mean that the subject of philosophy would be a little out of their league. But according to Gallions primary school in east London, the subject is being well received and in fact the school has had to produce their own teaching kits for other schools who are also interested in teaching this subject to their children. Around one hundred and fifty of these kits have been sold already to schools in the UK and abroad.

Paul Jackson, one of the school’s two head teachers, said: “Gallions opened in 1999 on a new estate in the East End, with all the problems that an inner-London estate brings.

“Virtually everyone that came here had some kind of emotional or behavioural difficulty.”

Maybe this would be great idea after all, if more schools taught subjects like this, would the UK be a better place in a few years time? One thing is for sure it could not get any worse!
