Education Quangos to merge

It seems that quangos come and go under the Labour government; the Quality Improvement Agency appears to be not long for this world, even tough it was only launched last year. There is talk that the QIA and the smaller Centre for Excellence in Leadership could be looking for a way to merge.

However this is not such a great surprise as there have been calls for these further education organisations to be cut back, as the whole of the further education sector is being expected to look after its own affairs by setting up its own self regulating bodies.

The QIA had annual budget of £93 million, while the much smaller CEL has a budget of only £12.3 million, yet this money has really had little effect on those institutions that it was created to help, colleges that have been identified as failing or merely coasting along.
