Education no better than in 1997!

Business leaders are saying that despite the claims from Labour that education was going to be the cornerstone of their plans, in reality the standards of education are still no better than when they first came to power.

The reasoning behind this is the fact that employers are receiving job applications from school leavers who may have various qualifications yet the standard of literacy and numeracy are well below the acceptable standards.

The Institute of Directors, who represent many of the countries senior’s business leaders, carried out the survey and found that only 32% believed that the standard of education had got better and the figure was only 29% who believed that the standard of education at universities had improved.

The conclusion is that ministers are too preoccupied with the exam results, rather than the overall standard of the basics i.e. English and Maths. Too many students are getting great qualifications in subjects that are irrelevant to their chosen career, hence the problem.
